The new Margaret Market has officially opened its doors, offering a modern two-story space that encompasses food stalls, fresh produce stands, and health and fitness services. Housed within a unique barrel-roofed building, this market replaces the former Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market and Food Centre, which was constructed in 1956 and inaugurated in 1960.
Of significance, Margaret Market is the only surviving establishment built by the Singapore Improvement Trust. Its historical value led to its conservation designation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority in 2014.
